Bells Bumz Cloth Nappy Care Guide and Simple cloth Nappy Washing Routine to make washing your cloth nappies easy and simple. Keeping your cloth nappies clean doesn't have to be hard work, with this step by step guide from the Cloth Nappy Nerds you will have clean cloth nappies easily. Caring for your Nappies Mention cloth nappies to older generations and they’ll describe soaking pails of smelly nappies, boiling them, folding towels, and accidents with safety pins. But the best reusable nappies these days can be as simple to put on as disposables – they’re shaped, elasticated, fastened with velcro or poppers, and come in a dazzling choice of prints. And they’re easier to care for too: there’s no soaking or boiling; all you have to do is chuck them in the washing machine. Truly, we are living in a golden age of reusable nappies. For detailed wash routine and washing help and advice we recommend www.clothnappynerds.com who also provide advice and guidance for how to sanitise pre-loved cloth nappies and nappies with ammonia build-up. However, please note that pre-loved nappies are not covered by our warranty and any bleach use on our nappies where they are new to you would void the warranty which is why we support their washing advice so that you will not need to use bleach on your nappies when you have a good washing routine. • All Nappies and wraps including inserts/ boosters (anything used as a nappy) must have an initial pre-wash followed by a full wash. • For a "pre-wash" we recommend a heated 40 or 60 degree short 45 min - 1 hour wash with half a dose of detergent. For nappies that are on baby for 5 hours or more, such as overnight, we recommend this is a 60 degree wash and this includes both the absorbent part and water resistant part or wrap. We recommend using the highest spin speed available when using a front loader washing machine. • For the "Full Wash" also known as the main wash we recommend you w ash on a 40 degree (maximum 60 degree) cycle with full dose of detergent. A full dose is in accordance with the dosage instructions for your detergent and will vary depending on drum size and water hardness, always refer to the "heavily soiled" dosage for nappies. We recommend if you are only doing your full wash every 3 or 4 days or if you are using non-bio detergent that you always wash at 60 degrees. We recommend that you make sure your washing machine is loosely full for your main wash (closed fist at the top) and use your longest cotton cycle (not eco). We recommend using the highest spin speed available when using a front loader washing machine. • Use liquid or powder detergent, do not use ecover or similar detergents with low surfactants and high levels of soap. • Tumble on low if needed but do not tumble anything with PUL (waterproof layer) • Keep away from direct heat sources such as radiators • Avoid nappy creams except those approved for cloth. • Fabric softener should never be used. • Using bleach will void the warranty. Reusabelles has a double row of waist poppers, a hip stability popper and 3 x 4 rise settings. There is soft tummy elastic at the front, which helps for containment for tummy sleeps but also helps the nappy to sit nicely underneath the belly button. The waist poppers are staggered which gives more flexibility to tighten or loosen the waist and legs settings without effecting the fit of the nappy. The original version has binding to the leg elastics to reduce the risk of leaks but not to the tabs or tummy panel making the nappy super comfortable for baby. This version is now discontinued and is available from our MISFIT Marketplace . The NEW Updated version has double PUL, with no binding and with soft rolled leg elastics, the combination working together to reduce the risk of leaks whilst maintaining optimal comfort for baby. The back, leg and tummy elastics are strong enough to form a seal yet gentle so as to reduce any compression (sock type) marks to baby. There are matching PUL tummy and back panels to reduce the chance of wicking and leaks. Inside there are concealed poppers front and back to attach the Reusabelles All in two insert. The Reusabelles All in two insert is a large natural fibre insert which has softly rolled elastics to form an internal double gusset. The insert itself has a white microfleece layer one side and athletic wicking jersey to the other allowing you to choose which side touches baby. The top layer of microfleece features a pocket, with an opening either end. This pocket is multi-functional as it allows for a booster to be added underneath the microfleece. The pocket also allows for you to easily feel whether the nappy is dry after washing and even allows you to turn the nappy inside out, to increase airflow to the natural fibres and speed up drying time. The Reusabelles all in two inserts can also be tumble dried on low. The nappy shell itself has exposed PUL, this means that if you wanted to use a larger booster or an additional booster then you could boost between the insert and the PUL. Also, it means that you can reuse the outer shell if not soiled. This nappy has been designed to reduce the need to boost, although every baby is different. The insert is made from 5 thirsty natural fibre layers of bamboo cotton (70% bamboo, 30% cotton). The nappy has been designed to be easy and simple to fit, it fits in one piece with minimal prep required, its designed to fit either untucked or tucked into the knicker line, whichever you prefer. The nappy does fit a little like a disposable nappy, yet the tummy elastic helps guide the nappy to a lower position helping you achieve a great fit every time. You can even make your own with 100% wool (not superwash) if you are good at knitting or crochet! Wool is natually breathable, temperature regulating and absorbent. When lanolised with 100% solid lanolin wool nappy covers are water repellent and make a great option for over your fitted or flat cloth nappies, especially at night. Before first use you will need to prepare the wool nappy cover by lanolising it three times back to back, and you may find that you need to wash and lanolise weekly for the first three weeks. After three weeks of use and proper preparation, wool nappy covers can be washed and lanolised monthly unless soiled or starting to smell. They can take a while to dry so we recommend having two wool covers for continuous use. For first use you will need to lanolise the nappy covers 3 times, this can be done "back to back" which means you do not need to dry the covers in between lanolin treatments. Simply prepare some luke warm water in a clean bowl, temperature should be no warmer than 30 degrees. In a mug add half a teaspoon of solid lanolin and half a teaspoon of washing up liquid or baby shampoo to boiling water. Stir until the water turns cloudy and the lanolin has dissolved and there is no lanolin floating on top. Add this mixture to your bowl of luke warm water and stir, it should turn cloudy. Add your wool cover and soak for at least an hour. Repeat this three times then gently press the wool cover (do not wring) to remove the excess water, roll the cover in a towel with gentle pressure and then lay flat to air dry. Add some wool wash or gentle soap (I use olive oil soap) and add your wool cover. Spot treat any soiling or staining and then leave to soak for 3 - 4 hours. Empty the water and then add clean luke warm water (no more than 30 degrees) to gently rinse the wool cover, again no wringing, a gentle swish should be fine. Follow with a lanolin treatment. To lanolise your wool cover you will need to prepare some luke warm water in a clean bowl, temperature should be no warmer than 30 degrees. There are many variables to consider when searching for the right reusable n appy: the size and shape of your baby, whether they’re prone to leaks (although poonami's are much less common in modern cloth nappies), and – crucially – your hom e washing and drying facilities. Using cloth nappies full-time, the size of your stash (how many cloth nappies you have) will dictate how often you wash your cloth nappies.
