The cost of living crisis, on top of the pandemic, means that even more people need help to access vital period products. Period poverty is the lack of access to menstrual products due to financial constraints. In 2017, a survey (Plan International UK) reported that 1 in 10 people had been unable to afford menstrual products; 1 in 7 had to ask to borrow period products from a friend due to affordability issues; and 1 in 10 had to improvise menstrual products. It is estimated that currently over 137,000 children across the UK have missed school days due to period poverty. ​ Around 22 items of period products are used per cycle and around 11,000 will be used in a lifetime. 4.3 billion menstrual products are used per year in the UK. ​ Cloth period pads and reusable menstrual products are often a more affordable option. Washable period pads can help minimise waste and save you money. Bells Bumz wants to encourage more people to give cloth period pads a go and hope that through this scheme we help more people choose to reuse. ​ A maximum of one application per person will be accepted, this can be from a parent or legal guardian for children who are unable to purchase for themselves. At Bells we often feel like we are misfits, creating HAVOC against world waste and campaigning to make cloth nappies, cloth period products and reusable products and accessories mainstream. A misfit is defined as "a person whose behaviour or attitude sets them apart from others in an uncomfortably conspicuous way." ​ Through our factories high quality work we do not have many perfectly imperfect products or "seconds quality" products. More often we have not to sale standard products due to human error, for example, they may be products that need a quick wash before use as they have been dropped on the Bells Bumz HQ warehouse floor. When this has occurred in the past, these have been donated to good causes such as charities in the UK and across the world. Since the launch of our Bells 4 Change programmes, we have decided to ringfence the money from any sales our misfits to fund Bells 4 Change which includes our Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme , The Period Incentive and Bells Grants .
